Post 3 : Social media considerations/ issues

Task 3.

Explain at least three issues (these could be technological, social, privacy etc) associated with the use of social media tools and app

1.Social

Society has become more interactive through increased access and use of the Internet and social media tools. Web 2.0 moved the Internet beyond information storage to a place where discourse takes place (Sawmiller, 2010). Social media, Internet tools that facilitate online interactions, have the potential to further expand such discourses. Social networks

2. Privacy

Privacy Most social media tools have privacy and filtering controls. This allows content to be public or restricted. These controls allow you to restrict who can and cannot view personal information, images and comments that are posted by you or others on to your online space. Be familiar with the site’s privacy options and consider how you can use these controls to protect your online identity. Most social media tools provide varying levels of privacy; the following are general examples:

3. Technological

Social media are increasingly implemented in work organisations as tools for communication among employees. It is important that we develop an understanding of how they enable and constrain the communicative activities through which work is accomplished because it is these very dynamics that constitute and perpetuate organisations. We begin by offering a definition of enterprise social media and providing a rough historical account of the various avenues through which these technologies have entered and continue to enter the workplace. We also review areas of research covered by papers in this special issue and papers on enterprise social media published elsewhere to take stock of the current state of out knowledge and to propose directions for future research.

Post 2 : What are social media tools?

Task 2:

In this post you must list and briefly describe (in your own words) five different types of social-media tools and applications.  Provide links to each of the homepages of the social media described.

Some examples of social media sites and applications include Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Digg, blogs and other sites that have content based on user participation and user-generated content (UGC).

1.  Facebook
Facebook is the Internet's most widely used social network, with nearly 1 billion people using it to connect with old friends and meet new ones. Its stated mission is to make the world "more open and connected" by connecting people and facilitating communication between them.

2. Twitter
Twitter is on online news and social networking site where people communicate in short messages called tweets. Tweeting is sending short messages to anyone who follows you on Twitter, with the hope that your messages are useful and interesting to someone in your audience. Another description of Twitter and tweeting might be micro blogging.

3.Instagram
Instagram is a social networking app made for sharing photos and videos from a smartphone. Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a profile and a news feed

4.Snapchat
To make a long story kind of short, snapchat is an app that truly changed how people interact with friends compared to other popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Not everyone gets it — particularly older adults — but Snapchat sure is all the rage among the youngest smartphone users, including teens and young adults.

5.Digg
Digg is a social news site that can help drive traffic to your blog. However, Digg is the biggest social news site on the Internet controlled by a handful of top users.

Post 1 : What is social media?

Task 1:

In your own words explain the characteristics of the term social media. Provide two links to sites that provide a good description of social media

The goal is usually to create content compelling enough that users will share it with their social networks. One of the key components of SMM is social media optimization (SMO). ... Enterprise social networking allows a company to connect individuals who share similar business interests or activities.
